Brighthelmstone Lodge 8042

A little about our Ken - a biography by Ted Mitten

Ken Brown was Born in Lewes in 1923.In 1935 the family moved to Brighton, where his father bought a business. Ken went to Varndean School until the start of WW II,then joined the family business.

His father was W.Bro Leslie Brown,P.Pr.J.G.D,a past master of Rottingdean Lodge No 4961, into which Lodge he initiated Ken on 19th March 1958. He was Passed on 18th February 1959 and Raised on 18th March 1959. In 1968 Kens Father Leslie became a Founder member of Brighthelmstone Lodge NO 8042, and Ken was a frequent guest until sadly, Leslie died in 1969, the year before his son became Master of Rottingdean Lodge in 1970.

It was in December 1969 that Ken became a Joining member of Brighthelmstone, and in that year the Lodge numbered Seven Ruling masters amongst its members. He was pleased to occupy the Chair to assist in Ceremonies on many occasions. He is P.Pr.G.Registrar in both Craft and Chapter - Royal Sussex No 732 and in his Mark Lodge, Duke of Richmond No 1025 holds Grand rank PAGSt Br, whilst in Royal Ark Mariner Lodge no 918 he also holds Grand Rank and is also a member of Sussex Installed Commanders Lodge.

In 1973 The first ever "Deacon" appeared of which Ken was the Editor and continued to compile it for 30 years until Issue no 57 in December 2003, when Bro. Lee Stafford came to his aid and enabled him to step down. The Lodge is extremely grateful to Ken for the many hours of hard work put in as Editor and now he can have a well earned rest. He is known as "Poet Laureate of Brighthelmstone" for verse which is acknowledged at meetings and, of course, for his own version and rendition of the "Nine O'clock Toast" being unique to himself.

Ken served in the Royal Corps of Signals during WWII in the Burma Campaign, and is proud to be President of the Brighton Branch of the Burma Star Association and Chairman of Brighton Branch of The Royal Signals Association.

Ken has been retired since 1994, but keeps busy, as you can see, and continues to enjoy life to the full. If you were to ask him if he had any regrets he would doubtless say "Just one, That my Dad did not live to see me become Master of Rottingdean Lodge".

We end this tribute to Ken by saying that he has always been a truly respected member of Brighthelmstone Lodge no8042 and we all look forward to many more happy years in his company with his poetry, jokes.
